Missed this post before.

I must say I'm quite confused. On the one hand you say "My vote would usually be for a backwards compatible version" yet on the other you say "it has definitely 'evolved', (so far, for the better, in my opinion)".

Note the word 'usually'. I have to say that I was talking generally, rather than specifically about BB4W. If a new version of an application is offered, that does not allow an old version document to be, at least, read, then generally I would have to think twice about using it. Any 'evolution' within BB4W has, in my opinion, been justified and quite accetable.

My previous statements were, I have to admit, more rambling as a general thought. My intention was to imply that I had no problem with version 6 going ahead and would probably upgrade. However, if for some reason, there was something that I didn't like and prefered version 5.x then that would be OK for me.

My intention was not to imply that I didn't think you ought to go ahead with v6, but that I had a version here that I was happy with if I didn't upgrade.

My definite opinion in this situation here and now is that you should do what you feel is right. So far, I haven't come across any alteration you've made that I honestly feel was a bad idea (even if there are some that I don't understand). So whatever you decide will no doubt turn out to be for the best, of that I'm quite confident.

I can't really see how being 'pro v5.95a' is different from being 'anti v6.00a' as far as my options are concerned. Perhaps you can elucidate.

We don't all see the world in black and white
(ones and zeros!)

"If you're not with us then you're against us!" is fine if you're a political or religious zealot but for most people life is a compromise of "vive la difference"

If we were all building a single integrated BB4W project then everyone would have to be on the same V6 page but everyone is doing their own independent mini project

You could probably bring all the stragglers on board with a Windows IDE which only works in V6+ if you wanted to, lol

It's a circuitous argument unless there is real incentive to upgrade, Bill Gates grappled with it for years

This is a technical forum, not a philosophical society!

Sorry, I don't understand. Isn't that exactly what I was proposing to do?

In any case I have been forced to abandon work towards an update, for the time being, for health reasons.

Richard.

Sorry to hear you've got health issues Richard, priorities change when that happens

That IDE stuff was romping along quite nicely until some genius at Yahoo decided to make those disastrous changes to the groups

So even if we're not V6 enabled yet, there's still a bunch of us hanging about

Hope you get well soon Richard.

I think the consensus so far is that your idea of releasing two versions one after the other is a good one. smiley
