BBC Basic for Windows Upgrade
« Thread started on: Jul 12th, 2017, 7:24pm »
Trying to upgrade BBC Basic for Windows from v3.13 to v6.10 results in absolutely no response from the exe file. I am running Windows XP SP2, can anyone tell me what I am missing?

Hi Anthony,
That's a big upgrade and an old operating system, but that shouldn't necessarily be a problem... The Help in BB4W 6.10a still says it should install and run on Windows 95 or 98.
It does say that you may need to install Microsoft Internet Explorer version 5.5 or later on those operating systems - I vaguely recall Richard saying it used one of the support files.
Perhaps the most likely problem is that the upgrade file got corrupted during downloading - have you tried simply downloading it again?
Do you have any anti-virus or anti-malware software that could be blocking it? Try disabling that, and then running it. Your "user status" might be an issue if you aren't using an admin account, but probably not in XP.
I have had problems with installers if you double-click it a second time when nothing seems to be happening - the two instances seem to interfere. You could look in the Task Manager to check. If in doubt, shut down and restart normally solves problems like that...
Failing that, or any other bright ideas from others here, you might be best contacting Richard Russell directly. Unfortunately he no longer reads/posts to this forum, but you could contact him via the "other forum":
