We're now up to 12 who've chosen option #1 ("I am interested, and may write my own 3D programs.").
Can't wait to see this avalanche of 3D programs!

BB4W has come with D3DLIB (based on Direct3D 8) as a standard library since nearly as long as BB4W has existed, and we're still awaiting the first game or application (not 'demo') which utilises it (my own half-hearted and incomplete efforts excluded!).
It'll be interesting to see what others may do with BB4W and Direct3D 11 on the back of Richard's tutorials, but anything reasonably substantial (e.g. game or application) would come as quite a surprise!

Hi David,
I think you answer your own implied question: I suspect most of the users here (including me) write programs mostly for their own amusement. Just because little in the way of publicly available games comes out doesn't mean no-one is using the material, or that it isn't valued.
I'm not sure it's terribly constructive to make sarcastic comments (or at least comments that can appear sarcastic) about the efforts of others.
Incidentally, I've spent some time thinking about D3D modelling for a chocks away type game, if you ARE interested... Admittedly, at the moment still in D3D8. I think all the vector buffer stuff etc would directly transfer into D3D11, though...
Best wishes,
D

I wasn't criticising or denigrating anyone's efforts. Obviously, I couldn't (and wouldn't) be sarcastic about efforts I haven't even seen, and I have generally been impressed by the few publicly released D3D-based efforts of others that I have seen. It would nice to see more, and I hope to see what people do with Direct3D 11, if anyone chooses to release their work.

My enthusiasm for programming is in a very deep trough at the moment. I may conduct my own experiments with D3D9LIBA in the coming months if I can pull myself out of it. If, in the meantime, you have the time + inclination to produce perhaps a limited 'proof of concept' for a Chocks Away!-type game, then I for one would love to see it. I feel I was some of the way there with my '3D Tour' demo in that you rode around on the ground, and flew around in the sky (and about the curiously ellipsoidal sun), but the horizon and all 3D objects never tilt (because no camera roll).

Hi David,
I'm working on it in a limited way, but I've got problems with my surface normals not being normal, which is annoying, since it should be quite straightforward. At the moment it's more like a helicopter sim, since you can hang in mid-air! Essentially, there's no physics model, but you can fly around my fractal landscapes. I'll post it as an idea once I've got the normals normal. I'm sure your 3d tour was more impressive - is there a link somewhere?
Best wishes,
D

A few points:
- Press 'Q' to exit the demo - You ride around on the ground for 3 or 4 minutes (this gets a bit tedious, admittedly) - Then you take off and fly around in the sky for a while - Eventually you fly among the er... 'stars' - The music (which may annoy) can't be turned off - sorry! - I seem to have lost the source code (been trying to hunt it down for Torro) - It uses a modified version fo Richard's D3DLIB (namely, I translated sections of it to assembly language for improved performance) - I introduced a bug to D3DLIB, possibly in the assembler code, which I've not been able to track down (and certainly won't be able to now!); it causes the program to sometimes crash on exit, which is why I suggest pressing 'Q' instead to exit (although it might still crash!)
Your fractal landscape idea sounds interesting. Hope you can resolve the normal problem!
