« Thread started on: Oct 22nd, 2017, 06:15am »

apologies if this is the wrong place.....
i have had BBCBASIC FOR WINDOWS for many years just to run my PBM zines but my PC is now old hat running Vista and is pretty much on it's last legs so i am shortly going to be buying a new pc with windows 10.

My question is, if i drag and drop the whole file for BBC basic which includes my programming and all it's associated data files will it all transfer over and run without the need to reload the program onto the new machine, or do i need to reload and then transfer all my data files and programs

Try reinstalling BBC Basic for windows in the new computer and transfer your files.
It is recommended to install it in the default directory. If you archived the email Richard sent you with your information and normally the name is what info you sent when you purchased it and the rest is in the confirmation email.

Although, you could try to copy the entire contents and transfer it into a identical directory in

C:\Program Files(x86)\BBC BASIC for Windows\

Of course that would just be BBC Basic for Windows and its components.

If you are having problems with either of these solutions, perhaps you should talk to Richard:

Hi Buzzwack,

I don't think simply copying the folder across will work - you'll need to install it "properly", using the installer program that you got when you first bought it, and then upgrade to the latest version, because the installer makes entries in the registry which are needed for it to run (basically, to check that you own it!). Doing that is likely to require administrator privileges.

You'll need your serial number to install it - you may want to note that down from your existing copy before ditching the computer! Look under "help" and then "About BBC Basic".

While as Michael says you probably SHOULD install it in the default place (which will put it into the "programmes" area, I actually don't: I put it in a user-writable folder, which means I can mess with libraries etc without having to use admin rights.

Once you've installed it, you can copy your existing programs across into a suitable folder. You probably want to avoid overwriting the new "examples" with the old ones.

Hope that helps.
